MAMAS PRIDE - AUGUST 1974 THROUGH OCTOBER 1976
A great experience ... thank you Danny & Pat Liston, Max Baker,
Kevin Sanders, Frank Gagliano and Paul Willett
The first album, Mamas Pride, was produced
at Criteria in Miami during the summer of 1975 by Arif Mardin. Atlantic housed us at 461 Ocean Blvd during our recording session.
Just to let you know: I took the the numbers off the mailbox and have them to this day. We had a lot of fun at that house.
There was a guest registration book for everyone to sign when you stayed there and if you could have seen the names...wow!
The second, Uptown & Lowdown, was produced by Jim Mason at Davlen Studios in
Hollywood during the summer of 1976. I played on all the tracks of Uptown & Lowdown except "End of Our Road"
which replaced a song I wrote called "Wanderin' Man. Jim Mason played bass on End of Our road. Timothy
B. Schmit (Eagles & Poco) and I sang the high harmony together on "Merry-Go-Round" - simply a treat for us and
me. To set the record straight: Tim was asked by Jim Mason to fill out the form to get credit on the album and he said no
and not to worry about it.
I left the band in October of 1976 over trivial matters and in hindsight, well, I still shake my
head about it, but you do things at times in your life that you regret but everything happens for a reason. A new photo
was reshot with my replacement and my song was replaced and months later the band was dropped by Atlantic. That was a
sad moment for me. Even though I left the band, I felt the potential was so strong for success and the talent was there. I
didn't think Atlantic knew what to do with it. I personally didn't like that we were labeled Southern Rock. Funny
little thing I remember - We had 3 encores in Birmingham on one of our first of many concerts with The Charlie Daniels
Band and Charlie commented to me as I walked off stage, "I'll be warming you guys up next time". That would
have been nice.
Well, things turn out like they're supposed to and the Lord is in control,
and these days ---"All is well with my soul".
I returned to college the following January, lettered in baseball for 3 years
and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B. S. in Education. I am also a Vietnam Era Veteran proudly serving
3 years on active duty in the United States Army. I was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas for 27 months as a Company Clerk.
I was ordered to VietNam in September of 1970 and 2 weeks into my training for Nam the orders were mistakenly canceled
by a clerk at personnel and that was that. I also served 4 years in the Missouri Air National Guard
as a Maintenance Systems Analyst on the F4C Phantom Aircraft.
I have 3 grown daughters who are in the medical and financial field and are well educated, very successful
and beautiful!!!
Both albums are available at www.woundedbird.com.Wounded Bird Records was formed in 1998 as a label that specializes in the
reissue of albums from the 60's, 70's and early 80's on compact disc. All of their releases are properly licensed from
the owner of the original masters, in most cases the original record label and sometimes the artists themselves. They
strive to reproduce the original album cover artwork, converted to accommodate the CD size format.
FYI -
* The song Wanderin' Man will be coming available
for sale and download.
* I'm always asked about the Pride reunions and
why I'm not there playing. I was asked once but I had a Z Band engagement and was unable to make the one reunion I was asked
to play. So I guess you should ask them why I'm not at the reunion concerts.
